European Heritage Label

Since 2014 the European Heritage Label is awarded to sites which played a key role in European history or in the EU unification process. They are selected for their symbolic value, the role they have played in the European history and the activities they offer in order to bring the European Union and its citizens closer together. The sites are supposed to contribute to the sustainable development of their region, especially through cultural tourism. Special cultural communication activities with emphasis on young target groups shall be conducted.

Participation by the EU member states is voluntary. They are entitled to nominate two sites every two years. Transnational nominations are also possible. Non-EU countries are not eligible. The selection process consists of a national pre-selection, the decision by EU expert panel and the formal awarding of the label by the European Commission.
